Red light ... Green light!

Do you remember playing that game in elementary school (and perhaps after if you were a big nerd like me)? Sometimes that's how I feel like my life is going. Go go go go go, and then stop and wait for a while. Strange how even when it's go go going, it seems to be at a standstill ... Deep thoughts ...

Since my last blog, I've started subbing! I've pretty much had two full weeks of it! In fact, I've only had two weeks of it which is weird because I feel like I've been subbing my whole life. It's strange, but I feel very comfortable in the school and in the classroom. I suppose it's probably because I always did very well in school, so I'm really in my element when I'm in the public school. I do enjoy teaching too, when I get the chance. I wish that more teachers would leave teaching opportunities instead of just time-fillers when they have a sub. Last Friday I was in a band classroom and the teacher had me put the children through a 50-minute, very boring video on Beethoven. Well, I could sure tell you just about anything you wanted to know about Beethoven, and it was slightly interesting to me, but not so much to middle-schoolers. So of course they're chatting through the whole thing and paying only as much attention as they need. And of course they're supposed to be filling out a worksheet while they watch it and of course I'm spoon-feeding them the answers as we go along because after all, it's middle school and that's what you do in middle school. The point is, I think teachers think they are doing subs a favor when they give them a video for the kids to watch. Right ... As if it wasn't hard enough to maintain crowd control as a sub anyway. But put on a boring video so they have nothing to do but fool around and chat with each other. *Sigh* Well, I'm learning lots about being a teacher from this ...

I've come to the conclusion that ellipses are my favorite form of punctuation ... Perhaps it's because of the way I live my life--always thinking about something ... rarely coming to conclusions ...

Okay, okay, I'll stop with the ellipses ... someday ...

Hey! I like those thingies too...I use them all the time...

Anyway, glad to hear your life is on the up and up and that you're getting busy with your subbing. Sounds like you're having fun, even if it is with boring Mozart videos.

I'm glad you are enjoying subbing...
One thing that I remember LOVING about the subs that came into my classroom was if they brought a small activity/lesson of their own that they could do in the first or last 5-10 minutes of the class. Even if I thought I'd left enough material for the sub, there's no way to be absolutely sure.
This made the students remember them and enjoy the Sub, and made an impression on the administrators so that when they needed to hire someone, they knew which sub had real teacher training and experience.
Don't worry about whether it's content related. Middle school kids love anything that is a self discovery activity, or something that (obviously) allows them to be social but in a structured way. It also works as a bribe-- "if you get this work done that your teacher left, I have a fun activity we can do in the time left over."

yay!!! I'm excited for you!!
